When they accepted a job as medical missionaries to Papua New Guinea soon after World War Two, Lester and Frieda Hawkes embarked on a lifetime of amazing adventures! This is their true story of the joys and hardships of medical missionary work involving crocodiles, snakebites, poisonings, heartbreaking accidents, cannibals and teaching in one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world.

Why I Wrote It

I helped Lester write this book after a friend handed me his typed manuscript in Church. I read it all through the sermon and all that afternoon. And when I was finished I felt awed and humbled. I just knew that I had to help publish this amazing story.

Who Likes It?

My own children enjoyed me reading it to them and its chapters are excellent for families to read together. Illustrated with pictures from the 1940s and 1950s it is an inspiring reminder that great and wonderful adventures follow the decision to serve God. Best read by motivated readers in high school and adults.
